HB Guineas likely test for Wolfwhistle
10 September 2013

Blueblood Wolfwhistle will step up to black type company at his next appearance after completing an outstanding day for his champion sire O’Reilly at Taupo. Following on from the earlier wins of Lego Figure and Spellbinder, the WS-bred and sold colt opened his account in the closing event on the programme.
“We’ll see how he comes through this race, but I think he will go to a stakes race for three-year-olds – put him in the deep end,” trainer Jason Bridgman said. “He’s got the manners to handle it and against town hall company it will give us a good line on the horse. He had to edge forward to get into contention from the 700 metres, but on a bigger track we will be able to hold him a bit longer. He’s just such a nice horse and he has considerable talent.” The Gr 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas on October 5 is a race on Wolfwhistle’s radar.
He had placed in one of his two previous starts and impressed rider Matt Cameron with his improvement. “That was really good,” he said. “He settled nicely, popped off when he needed to and had momentum coming down the hill (to the straight entrance) and was too good for them. He gave me a really good feel.” The home-bred three-year-old beat the Pins mare Frankly, who has yet to be out of the money in three starts in the WS colours.
Wolfwhistle is out of Pins’ daughter Legs, who won twice at Group One level in the New Zealand Oaks and the Kelt Capital Stakes, and was purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis out of WS’s 2012 Premier Sale draft for $240,000. “He was one of the best colts in our draft and one at great value, too – he’s a very good product out of a very good mare and he’s a racehorse,” Mark Chittick said at the time.
