Pins filly stages perfect guineas trial

Maritimo warmed up for a Group One assignment with a commanding performance on the opening day of the Riccarton carnival this afternoon. The WS graduate won for the third time in her six start career, which includes a victory in last season’s Listed Wellesley Stakes.
“She showed her true ability today and she will definitely run in the 1000 Guineas next Saturday,” Debbie Rogerson said. Her husband and training partner Graeme purchased the Pins filly for $200,000 at Karaka last year.
She is out of the O’Reilly mare Miracle Miss, who won five races and finished fourth in the 1000 Guineas of her year. She is also a sister to the dual Group Three Desert Gold Stakes and Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes winner Dating.
Maritimo was handled by Johnathan Parkes, who was suitably impressed and looking forward to riding her in the Riccarton classic. “It was a very smart win against the older horses,” he said. “I was really happy with the way she relaxed ahead of the fillies’ race next week.”
