Trainer All Praise for Gr.3 Winner O’Fille

Wayne Marshment deflected all the praise on to his charge O’Fille (NZ) after she had put paid to a competitive field of mares in the Group Three teakaustud.co.nz Cuddle Stakes on her favourite Trentham track.

The Wanganui horseman’s skills were to the fore to bring the five-year-old daughter of O’Reilly back from an unplaced effort in the 2400 metre Wellington Cup to down a hot lineup over the metric mile.

“You can do that with good horses – you can’t with the slow ones,” Marshment said when complimented on the feat. “She was unlucky in the Cup and Noel Harris was a bitdepressed, but you’ve got to carry on. We’re lucky the owners
have got plenty of patience.”

Marshment said O’Fille, who had won the Group Three Trentham Stakes prior to the Cup, will now follow a familiar path in her next two appearances. “She’ll go to Manawatu next and then on to the Travis and that will be probably be it
for the season for her.”

Last year the Peter Smith-bred O’Reilly filly ran third in the Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes and then headed to Te Rapa where she was again third, although subsequently promoted to second, behind Dolmabache in the Group Two Travis Stakes.

Her regular partner Noel Harris gave O’Fille every opportunity at Trentham to turn her luck around and the mare delivered with a fine turn of foot in the run home that took her to a length and a quarter victory.

“She deserved that today and not taking anything away from the winner she was very unlucky when fifth last year,” he said. “She likes a bit of room and we got a beautiful run today and she really responded. She’s still untapped.”
