Lopov Set For Perth Feature
29 November 2011
A Perth-based syndicate will chase a speedy return when their new purchase lines-up in the Gr 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on New Year’s Eve. The syndicate, led by Perth Racing committeeman Peter Gangemi, has bought the well-performed stayer Lopov from clients of the Danny O’Brien stable.
The WS-bred son of Savabeel won five of his 22 starts for O’Brien, including successes over 2400 metres at Caulfield and 2500 metres at Morphettville earlier this year. He was a $25,000 Premier Sale buy in 2009 and is a brother to the Peter Moody-trained Brambles who has won two of his three starts.
Lopov’s new owners have entrusted Simon Miller to train the four-year-old. Miller told The West Australian that Lopov would run in the Perth Cup without a lead-up start. He finished seventh in the Lavazza Long Black at his last run on Melbourne Cup day, meaning the Perth Cup will be the stayer’s first run for two months.
“He was going to run in the Sandown Cup over 3200m earlier this month, so he is already rock-hard fit,” Miller said. I find when you travel horses interstate or change their environment they fly first-up. I’ve spoken to the owners and they have agreed to it. He failed Melbourne Cup day because being on the fence was off.”
