Savabeel Makes Presence Felt
16 October 2011
WS stallion Savabeel was a major player on one of the biggest stages of the spring with three of his offspring featuring highly and led by his well-performed son Tullamore. He put up a mighty performance to finish third from a wide gate in the Gr 1 Caulfield Cup while both Sangster and Dowager Queen also gave fine accounts of themselves.
Winner of the Gr 2 Brisbane Cup during the winter, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Tullamore boosted his Gr 1 prospects in the upcoming Melbourne Cup with a strong showing at Caulfield. “Terrific run. When he got out he ran home really well,” jockey Craig Newitt said.
Gr 1 Spring Champion Stakes placegetter Sangster was also in the money in the Gr 3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield. He enjoyed a good early run before he was allowed to roll forward quickly and three wide before the turn. He shot clear into the straight but his effort told close to home and he finished a creditable second.
Savabeel’s daughter Dowager Queen had finished third in the Gr 1 Flight Stakes at Randwick and she went one better in the Listed Ethereal Stakes without any luck at all. She rocketed home after an interrupted passage to return a glowing trial for the Gr 1 VRC Oaks.
