Group-winning sprinter

Service Fee $20,000 + GST, LFG

At Waikato Stud we are very excited about the introduction of one of the Stud’s newest acquisitions because of the diversity, balance and class he brings to the stallion roster. Ardrossan represents a precocious element both in performance and through a strong paternal and maternal pedigree and brings an opportunity to breed to the most successful sire of sires’ line in decades in Australasia via Redoute’s Choice.

Ardrossan expressed his high level of ability only fleetingly during an abbreviated nine-start career, but good judges rated him a potential Group 1 performer of the very highest order. Unbeaten in two New Zealand starts at two years, and winning by 3.5 lengths at his second start in a Listed 1100-metre event; he was sent to Melbourne where he defeated Group 1 winner Shoals in a trial before suffering a heart strain.

Fully recovered six months hence, he easily won first-up at home before the ARC Gr.3 Concorde in which he defeated the Gr.1 2000 Guineas-placed Ever Loyal. Next start he was only a head and nose behind the ten-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle and triple Group 1 winner Bostonian in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa.

Ardrossan raced only once more. It was on an unsuitable heavy track at Rosehill in which he finished a close third in the Gr.3 Star Kingdom Stakes – he sustained an injury which brought on early retirement.

The strength of the Danehill blood through Redoute’s Choice remains supremely dominant with 10 of his sons at stud, led by Champion Sire Snitzel having sired 21 Group 1 winners. Others include Not a Single Doubt and Stratum II.

As well as an acclaimed sire of sires, Redoute’s Choice internationally has 60 Group 1 wins and 372 Group and Listed events to his credit. In Australia, he has sired 40 individual Group 1 winners and 182 stakes winners. His second-crop son Snitzel emulated his own sire when he took out his third consecutive Champion Sire of Australia title in 2018/19, one of three sires to achieve this including Danehill.

Breeders looking for early speed will also be encouraged by Ardrossan’s dam Miss Argyle, by Iglesia, who was second in the Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick – the first fillies’ stakes race of the two-year-old season.

Ardrossan was purchased as a yearling in Melbourne by outstanding judge Bruce Perry who describes him as, ‘a beautifully balanced and athletic individual; a very good mover with good bone and exuding quality and presence.’

Ardrossan’s first crop of two-year-olds stepped out with immediate impact in the 2022/2023 season. The first was Codigo, with a speedy and precocious turn of foot, who was a winner on debut and then took out the Listed Wellesley Stakes. Loch Katrine followed suit with a courageous win in the Listed Champagne Stakes on just her third start. Ardrossan’s third stakes winner came as Saltcoats bolted home in the Listed Futurity Stakes at Pukekohe. His fourth individual stakes winner from his first two crops came when Beau Dazzler scored the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes on his second start as a pre-Christmas two-year-old at Eagle Farm and returning at three to claim the Gr.3 Grand Prix Stakes. Yaldi stepped out on Boxing Day in 2024 to win the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas, and Ardalio claimed the Gr.3 Cambridge Stud Almanzor Trophy over 1200m on Karaka Millions night capping a promising start for our young sire.

From small crops of racing age – 137 foals from his first three crops, Ardrossan is producing incredible statistics striking at 10.2% Stakes winners to runners and 5.1% Group winners to runners. In the six-week period from December 2024 to January 2025 he produced three Group winners: Beau Dazzler, Yaldi and Ardalio. Total number of runners? 59.

Ardrossan’s second crop of yearlings went down incredibly well at the sales, averaging over 33 times his 2020 service fee, with his top colt making A$260,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale.
