Aegon delivers in fine style

Aegon overcame a wide gate on the tight, turning Taupo track to produce a sparkling winning performance on debut.

The Waikato Stud-bred and sold gelding stamped himself as a three-year-old to follow today with confidence when he came with an electric finish from well back in the running to carry a set of Group 1-winning colours to victory.

Aegon was a $150,000 Karaka purchase for his co-trainer Andrew Forsman and the Zame Partnership, who enjoyed Australian Derby success with Jon Snow.

Forsman had expected Aegon to give a good account of himself, but admitted the effort had exceeded all expectations.

“He has showed a heap of ability at home, but he is very immature and can only get better,” he said. “I thought he would run well, maybe fourth or fifth, and to see him do that was pretty exciting.”

A half-brother to the multiple Singapore winner Super Tycoon, Aegon is a son of the late Sacred Falls and the Zabeel mare Toss Up and the immediate family of the G1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Good Faith.

Further down the page is the Waikato Stud homebred Daffodil, successful three times at Group 1 level and the dam of three multiple winners including the stakes performer Snowdrop.
