Aegon produces dazzling Guineas display

The Waikato Stud-bred and sold Aegon kept his unbeaten record intact with a blistering finish to land the thick end of the stake this afternoon in the G3 Hawke’s Bay Guineas.

He is a son of the late Sacred Falls, who won the Hastings feature in 2012, and was making his first appearance since his maiden victory at Taupo in August.

Ridden by Leith Innes, Aegon looked a forlorn chance on straightening but unleashed a dashing late run to land the major honours.

“I didn’t think he would be able to do that, to make up that ground in the last 200 metres was a great effort,” co-trainer and part-owner Andrew Forsman said.

“He is still an immature horse, but he’s got a ton of ability. To see him do that was a buzz, he’s a pretty smart horse.”

Forsman signed the ticket at $150,000 at Karaka to purchase Aegon, who is a son of the Zabeel mare Toss Up and she has a 100 per cent record at stud with all four foals to race successful.

The pedigree page features Waikato Stud’s three-time Group 1 winner Daffodil and the G1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce S. winner Good Faith, who produced the G3 McNeil S. winner Tully Dane.
