Patience handsomely rewarded with dashing debut win
A lengthy wait came to a successful conclusion when It Might Be You made a dream start to her career with a dominant performance this afternoon to score at Te Rapa.
Bred and raced by Garry Chittick, the Savabeel filly is prepared by Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard and she indicated the 3-year-old may relocate at some stage to the Flemington arm of the training operation.
“She’s a filly with a lot of ability and she could well end up over the ditch with Mike,” Gerard said.
It Might Be You was a smart lead-up trial winner and she had no trouble carrying that form over to raceday. She sat in second spot to the turn and when rider Danielle Johnson asked her to lengthen stride she surged clear to win by 3.8l.
Gerard said the filly had requited plenty of time to both recover from injury and to fully develop.
“She had quite a nasty paddock accident and the guys at Waikato Stud have been very patient with her. She spent the best part of a year in a box and she has also been a bit slow to mature.”
While It Might Be You was sent out a warm favourite, Gerard admitted to a pre-race concern.
“There was a question mark about the Heavy 10 ground. She is going to be much better on a decent track,” she said.
It Might Be You is a half-sister to the multiple Group 2 winner and sire Ocean Emperor and their dam Tootsie was a talented performer. The Pins mare won seven races, including the G3 Mannerism S. and is a sister to the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Legless Veuve.
Also featuring up front in the pedigree are Savabeel’s multiple Group 1-winning daughters Probabeel and Savvy Coup.
Waikato Stud farewells Posy
Bluehen mare Posy, dam of Group 1 winner Atishu, Group winner Mazzolino and Flemington winner Dream All Day, has been laid to rest, aged 17. She retired to Waikato Stud’s broodmare band in 2014 and left a lasting legacy.
