Clean sweep of stallion titles for super Savabeel
Another stellar season for Savabeel has proven his stallion dominance as he secures a seventh consecutive
Grosvenor Award as Champion New Zealand Sire.
Waikato Stud’s star resident also claimed his sixth Centaine Award for worldwide progeny earnings
and regained his Dewar Award for combined Australian and New Zealand progeny earnings.
It is the fifth time he has claimed the Dewar title after associate stallion Ocean Park broke his run
when he won it in 2020.
“It’s certainly been another outstanding season for Savabeel and for him to be the leading stakes
producer in Australasia is something we are very proud of,” Mark Chittick said.
Savabeel sired 19 black-type winners during the 2020-21 season with four at Group 1 level to take
his career tally of individual top-flight winners to 23.
Probabeel, Amarelinha, Mo’unga and Concert Hall earned Group 1 glory to join Kawi, Lucia
Valentina, Sangster, Soriano, Scarlett Lady, Savvy Coup, Shillelagh, Costume, Diademe, Sword Of
Osman, Nicoletta, Brambles, Savaria, Pasadena Girl, Hall of Fame, Hasahalo, Cool Aza Beel, Sound
Proposition and Embellish as Savabeel’s leading representatives.
In total, he has produced 115 stakes winners at a runners to winners ratio of a remarkable 11 per
cent with an overall winning strike rate of 72 per cent.
“He’s now also emerging as a broodmare sire, which was always going to be a no brainer as he’s by
Zabeel out of a Success Express mare – two sensational broodmare sires,” Chittick said.
Savabeel’s daughters have this season produced the G1 Goodwood H. winner Savatoxl, the G2
Waikato Guineas winner Tokorangi, the G3 Gold Trail S. winner Force Of Will and the Hong Kong star
and G3 Sha Tin Vase winner Courier Wonder.
Ocean Park may have lost his Dewar crown, but he nevertheless had another successful season and
finished fourth in the race for the Grosvenor Award and third in both the Centaine and Dewar
standings.
He was represented by the dual Group 1 winners Kolding (All Aged S., George Main S.) and Tofane
(Stradbroke H., Tattersall’s Tiara) while Ocean Billy was triumphant in the G1 Auckland Cup.
“He’s had a great season and Tofane’s success at the Queensland carnival were obvious highlights
for us and that’s not taking anything away from Kolding and Ocean Billy,” Chittick said.
Shailer pair building nicely into spring campaigns
WS-breds Justin Case and Magice contributed to a memorable season for Kris Shailer in his return to the training ranks last term, and he is hoping they can continue their form into the new season.
