Further Group Honour For Savabeel

In-form stallion Savabeel has earned a further stakes credit courtesy of his Singapore-based son Nandowra. The WS homebred was back to his best at Kranji on Friday night to claim the Gr 3 Polytrack Mile Championship.

The winner last year of the Gr 3 Moonbeam Vase and a close second in the Gr 1 Patron’s Bowl, he made the running and rallied strongly for his latest success. Clocking the smart Polytrack time of 1:38.99, Nandowra racked up his eighth win from 24 starts for prizemoney in excess of $690,000 for the Results Stable.

Trainer Michael Freedman said that he and jockey Manoel Nunes had decided on their tactics when they realised there were no real speedsters in the line-up.
“As it was a small field and there was no natural leader, I told Manoel not to be afraid to be positive from his outside gate.

“I also told him to make sure to get going from the 600 mark and make them chase him. And that’s exactly how it panned out. I knew he would be very fit as he was coming back from a distance race. He’s a good genuine stayer and has always been thereabouts in his races as he’s such a fighter.”

Freedman has earmarked the Group Two Queen Elizabeth Cup over 1800 metres on April 26 as a possible target for Nandowra, who was bred by Garry Chittick and was a $25,000 Karaka yearling.
