Pedigree Pointers with Gareth Downey

Gareth Downey

The pinnacle of racing at this time of year is always the Sydney Autumn Carnival – and it was wonderful to see Pretty To Sea pick up black type with an excellent 2nd placing in the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick last weekend.  This was a wonderful result for Nicole and Kevin Agent who made the astute investment in buying this filly two years ago, and now race her with their fellow owners.  We congratulate all the owners, as well as Ciaron Maher, Michael Dee and all connections.

In securing black type, Pretty To Sea became the 4th black type performer for her sire Ocean Park – whose black type performers are now:

  • Ocean Jewel – 1st Listed Placid Ark Stakes
  • Mongolianconqueror – 2nd Gr.1 NZ Derby, 2nd Gr.2 Waikato Guineas
  • Pretty To Sea – 2nd Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes
  • Ocean’s Fourteen – 2nd Listed Geelong Classic

Ocean Park has established an excellent record of producing repeat city class winners, and we are now expecting these horses to continue securing black type with further maturity, as was the case with Ocean Park himself.  We are delighted with the progress being made by the Ocean Park progeny.  The results for a stallion of his profile are particularly good, as is highlighted in the table below that compares Ocean Park against Savabeel at the exact same stage of their careers:

The Corner with Garry Chittick

It is difficult to maintain momentum when sitting in judgment of racing’s governance. After all, I get no pleasure in searching for non-credible decisions, but one is perpetually bewildered by the rationale behind many of the positions that make little sense.
