Second Brisbane Cup Winner for Savabeel
8 June 2014
WS Sire Savabeel registered his second Gr.2 Brisbane Cup winner behind Tullamore yesterday, when the gutsy racemare Floria outstayed her rivals in the Eagle Farm feature.
The Peter Moody-trained daughter of Savabeel and the Centaine mare Aria was too good for her rivals in the 2400 metre event in the hands of Kieran McEvoy.
“It’s my first ride on the mare and she’d been running very well,” he said.
“It was her first try at the trip and she got a lovely run in transit and I put them to the sword on the turn.”
Floria dashed clear and comfortably held the chasers at bay in the straight. “To her credit she was really strong late,” McEvoy said.
Floria, who carries the colours of Haunui Farm, began her career in New Zealand with Stephen McKee and won the Gr 3 Cuddle Stakes before transferring to Moody’s yard. She was Group One placed at the Queensland carnival last year in the Tatt’s Tiara, won the Gr 3 Summoned Stakes in the spring and most recently was placed in the Gr 2 Eagle Farm Cup.
