3YO opens winning account at Otaki

Only The Lonely (Tivaci ex On Your Own) capped off the strong start she has made to her career with success at Otaki on Boxing Day.

The Waikato Stud-bred daughter of Tivaci had finished runner-up in her first two appearances before she finished third in a competitive age group event at Trentham earlier this month.

The three-year-old hadn’t missed a beat since for trainer Bryce Newman and produced a determined display as a short-priced favourite to break her maiden over 1400 metres.

She settled in behind the pace on the fence before apprentice Jim Chung urged her to improve wide near the turn and the filly held a sustained gallop to the post.

Raced by the Matamata nursery with the Common Ground Racing Fun Times Syndicate, Only The Lonely is the first foal of the unraced Sacred Falls mare On Your Own.

She is out of the Zabeel mare Dee I Why, whose three-quarter sister Ritzy Lady won the Listed New Zealand St Leger and is the dam of Group 1 winner Snazzytavi.

There is also an international flavour to the pedigree with the presences of the South African Group winners Hancock Park and her daughter Park Lane.

On Your Own produced a sister last season to Only The Lonely last season before visiting Banquo.

Only The Lonely’s win made it an early Boxing Day double for Tivaci with Tommy Shelby (ex Fermentation) saluting in the first at Wingatui.
