Wolfwhistle Wins Trial

Well named two-year-old colt Wolfwhistle (O’Reilly – Legs, by Pins) showed improvement for his first trial experience with a smart win over 1000 metres at the trials on Tuesday March 26 at Paeroa.

With Matt Cameron aboard, the athletic colt settled fifth from the outside barrier, circled stylishly from the 400 metres to lead on straightening and won with his ears pricked by three-quarters of a length in a time of 59.40.

Purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis for $240,000 at the 2012 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, from the draft of Waikato Stud, Wolfwhistle had shown trainer Jason Bridgman the right qualities since being in work.

“He’s pretty smart,” said Bridgman. “He settled straight away, came back to the rider and he’s got all the attributes. He’s got the turn of foot, did it so easily, was balanced on the corner and really at this stage he has everything ticked. He has a magic temperament and lovely manners and a beautiful action. He’s a push button horse and one at the top of my list.

There to see the trial, Garry Chittick [Waikato Stud] said: “He’s got a lovely action and he’ll grow into a classic type three-year-old. I thought he travelled beautifully in his first trial when he ran fourth and it was certainly there again. He’s out of a very good mare….

Joint top filly on the 2005-06 NZ 3YO Free Handicaps, Legs (Pins – River Century, by Centaine) raced twelve times for five wins and stakes of $875,428. She recorded Group One wins in the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Kelt Capital Stakes (2040m), won the Eulogy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) and finished second in the Desert Gold (Gr. 3, 1600m). She was a high-class filly that showed her best on good and dead ground.

“A run at two would set him up for his three-year-old campaign and it will help him learn his job, but we will wait and see how he pulls up before making further plans,” said Bridgman.

“He’s run the time from four or five lengths off the lead and the impressive part for me was from the 600 metres to the 300m when he circled them going four or five horses deep and only good horses can do that. He’s got a turn of foot, that’s the key – class. You don’t see many horses come from off pace at the trials and when he got to the front he just loafed, with his ears pricked, everything about the trial was impressive.

At the time of purchase, Waikato Stud boss Mark Chittick had said: “He was one of the best colts in our draft and one at great value, too. “He’s a very good product out of a very good mare and he’s a racehorse.
