Savvy Nature returns top Derby trial
29 October 2013

Savvy Nature has joined his WS-based sire Savabeel as a feature race winner at Moonee Valley. Nine years after the stallion won the Gr 1 Cox Plate as a three-year-old, the John O’Shea-trained gelding triumphed in the Gr.2 Vase.
While he didn’t look altogether comfortable on the turning track, Savvy Nature was a class above his opposition for rider James McDonald. He is expected to be much better-suited to the big Flemington track in the Gr 1 VRC Derby.
“Obviously James had nothing to bring him into the race, he’s got the job done, he’s had a nice gallop.” O’Shea said. “This race is usually a good guide to the Derby and let’s hope it works out the same this year.”
O’Shea was mindful that Savvy Nature’s main goal is next Saturday. “He attacked the line good, he made a searching run, but not one that will knock him out,” he said. “He’s a big gross horse, he’s put on eight to ten kilos since he’s been down here. He loves his work and this will just top him off. We’ll give it our best shot next week.”
