Milford strikes again at Caulfield
Multiple stakes winner Milford continued his impressive run of form in Melbourne with further success at Caulfield this afternoon.
The Waikato Stud graduate claimed top honours in the G3 Easter Cup last month and a return visit to the course delivered further success over 2000 metres.
Prepared at Flemington by Michael Moroney, the four-year-old son of Savabeel was again given an ideal ride by jockey Patrick Moloney.
They settled in fourth spot one off the fence and, after lodging their challenge three-wide at the top of the straight, hit the front 200 metres from home and stayed on strongly to defy their opposition.
Milford was bought out of Waikato Stud’s New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale draft for $360,000 by bloodstock agent Bruce Perry and carries the colours of prominent Wellington owner Lib Petagna, who races the gelding with partners.
He won the Listed Gingernuts Salver at Ellerslie for Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh and finished runner-up in the G1 New Zealand Derby before relocating to Melbourne.
Milford is out of the O’Reilly mare Etiquette, who is an unraced sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and successful sire Sacred Falls. She produced a Savabeel filly last season and is again in foal to the champion sire.
Wee Nessy breaks her maiden in style
Savabeel’s three-year-old filly Wee Nessy impressed at Ellerslie, charging home to break her maiden in dominant fashion. The win marked Savabeel’s 1057th individual winner, with his progeny earnings surpassing $208 million as his legacy continues to grow.
