Special day for Savabeel filly

Savabeel

Victory bells rang for Newley Wed at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon when the well-bred filly carried Waikato Stud’s familiar silks to a hollow victory over 1200 metres.

A member of one of the Matamata farm’s most decorated families, the daughter of Savabeel showed the benefit of her resuming run for fifth on the course last month with a rewarding return visit.

Trained by John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes, Newley Wed settled midfield on the fence before rider Andrew Adkins angled off the rail before the turn.

The 3-year-old was into clear air at the top of the straight and lengthened stride in style under 60kg in the closing 400 metres to coast home by 2.3l at her fourth appearance.

Newley Wed is the first foal of the O’Reilly mare Absolutely Me, who is a half-sister to the dual Group 1-winning half-siblings Glamour Puss and Vision and Power and the G2 Stan Fox S. winner Rare Insight, dam of the G1 Coolmore Classic winner Steps In Time.

Acting, successful in an edition of the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude, and the G3 James HB Carr S. winner and G1 Surround S. placegetter Espiona also feature on the pedigree page.

Absolutely Me has visited Savabeel exclusively in her broodmare career and has an unraced juvenile named Candy Love, a yearling filly and was served again by the champion sire in 2021.
