Dashing double for Matamata farm

Savito

A pair of Waikato Stud-bred and raced mares raced up to their illustrious pedigrees at Taupo on Wednesday afternoon to deliver a winning double for the premier Matamata nursery.

Tivaci’s daughter Outfit, who was a black-type placegetter last season, opened her preparation in style while Savabeel mare Savito broke through for a deserved success off the back of three minor placings.

Prepared by Mark Walker and recipients of fine rides by Opie Bosson, the duo boast rich pedigrees as daughters of multiple Group 1 winners.

“Congratulations to Garry, Mark and the team at Waikato Stud and thank you for your continued support,” Walker said.

Outfit began her quest for further stakes honours in commanding fashion with an effortless first-up victory over 1300 metres, a distance short of her best.

She was quickly into stride to settle within sight of the leaders and finished off generously to set the foundation for a lucrative spring preparation.

“She got black-type as a three-year-old and she will improve over more ground, but we thought she would go pretty well fresh,” trainer Mark Walker said.

Outfit posted a win and three placings last season, including a runner-up finish in the Listed Oaks Prelude.

“This mare is raced by the staff at Waikato Stud, who unfortunately lost a mare in foal a week ago, so this is a great tonic and consolation for everyone,” farm principal Mark Chittick said.

“Thank you to Bill (Ewen) and Roisin (McQuillan) at Matamata Vets, who give our farm incredible support and they’ve got a great team.”

Outfit is out of Savabeel’s dual elite level-winning daughter Costume, who has an unraced Tivaci juvenile colt and foaled a filly last season by Super Seth before visiting Ardrossan.

Savabeel four-year-old Savito raced in fourth spot on the fence and drove between runners in the straight to surge clear at the end of 1300 metres to open her account.

“It was a good effort and Savito is going to be better over more distance,” Walker said.

“She’s still getting there in the coat, so plenty of improvement to come and a lovely ride by Opie.”

Savito is a daughter of the two-time Group 1 winner Suavito, who is in foal to Super Seth.

Her brother was purchased by Bjorn Baker Racing and Clarke Bloodstock for A$360,000 at the 2021 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale while his younger sibling went to Cheltenham Stables in Sydney last year for A$200,000.
