Battle Sound shines on debut

The Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained Battle Sound turned in an outstanding performance at Matamata on Wednesday afternoon to make an auspicious start to his career.

The three-year-old son of Belardo dropped back from a wide barrier under apprentice Lemmy Douglas and was a clear last 600 metres from home.

They started to pick up ground soon after and, after cornering wide out on the track, produced a paralysing burst to pick up his rivals with some ease.

Nominated for the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, he was bred by Waikato Stud and the Dowager Duchess of Bedford and sold through the Matamata farm’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale to Paul Moroney for $60,000.

Battle Sound is a son of the unraced O’Reilly mare Tiff And Co, who is a daughter of the imported G3 Newmarket Nell Gwyn S. winner Myself, and a half-sister to the Listed Sky High S. winner Single.

Tiff And Co was served last season by Super Seth after foaling a colt by the Dundeel stallion.
