Bosson’s prediction rings true
Wise words from champion jockey Opie Bosson paved the way for the Waikato Stud-bred and raced Lippy to post the first winning strike of his fledgling career at Awapuni on Saturday afternoon.
He had ridden the son of Tivaci into sixth when he resumed over 1200 metres at Avondale earlier this month and subsequently told trainer Andrew Forsman the gelding was a next-up winner over 1600 metres.
Bosson’s advice proved spot on and the three-year-old settled behind the pace today before improving three wide to lead at the top of the straight and responded positively in the run home for rider Kozzi Asano.
“He was a bit keen, but as soon as we got some cover he travelled nicely and was very strong.” Asano said.
Lippy is the first winner for the Savabeel mare Cheex, a half-sister to black type winner Maritimo and the immediate family of the dual Group 3 winner and G1 Captain Cook S. placegetter Dating.
Cheex has an unraced Ardrossan juvenile filly named Li Li and produced a sister to Lippy last year before visiting Banquo.
