Trainer hoping for Cup run

Following a victory for the Waikato Stud-bred son of Savabeel at Riccarton on Wednesday afternoon, John Wheeler has his fingers crossed that promising stayer Oso Savvy will gain a start in Saturday’s G3 New Zealand Cup.

The New Plymouth trainer produced Oso Savvy to win over 2500 metres and has a back-up plan in place for the six-year-old if he doesn’t beat the ballot.

“He’s in the 2000 metre race on Saturday, but if he gets in the Cup he’ll run in that,” Wheeler said.

Oso Savvy had to overcome a tough run to showcase his staying talents after racing back and wide before finishing off relentlessly in the run home.

“He covered a bit of extra ground, but once we straightened up and he was balanced he went through is gears and was really tough.” successful rider Daniel Stackhouse said.

Oso Savvy was originally purchased for A$170,000 by Enigma Farm at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from Maluka Thoroughbreds before Stephen Marsh bought him for $240,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale from Riversley Park.

He was a multiple winner for the Cambridge trainer before relocating to Wheeler’s Taranaki
operation.

Oso Savvy is a son of the late Pins mare Heyday, who is from the family of the Group One winners
Legs, Guyno and Sixty Seconds.
