Savabeel mare appreciates extra trip

A step up in distance at Hawkesbury on Thursday afternoon brought about the desired result for Calm Down, who duly posted a deserved breakthrough success.

The Waikato Stud-bred and raced daughter of Savabeel had placed in six of her previous eights starts for trainer Ron Quinton and the rise to 1800 metres was just the ticket for the four-year-old.

“It’s a relief and Ronny had been getting a bit frustrated,” stable representative Dale Harris said.

“Going by her breeding, she might go further and her racing attributes are very good and she settles well in her races.”

Calm Down was given a dream run in the trail by rider Andrew Atkins and was angled off the fence before the turn.

The mare hit the front 150 metres from home and strode clear with a minimum of effort to score by 1.4l.

Her victory was a timely one for her half-sister by Ocean Park who will be offered by Waikato Stud as Lot 98 during next month’s Book 1 session at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale at Karaka.

One of seven winners from the unraced Anabaa mare Chilled Out, Calm Down is a sister to the Listed Rowley Mile winner and multiple Group placegetter Savacool.

Their close relation is Coldplay, who numbered Group 2 victories in the Rich Hill Mile and Cal Isuzu S. among her six career wins.
