Savabeel filly coasts to victory
Black type performer Skew Wiff showed her class on her home track on Saturday when she cruised to victory over 1200 metres.
Trained at Matamata by Mark Walker, the Waikato Stud-bred and raced daughter of Savabeel had no trouble coming back in distance and also handled the heavily rain-affected surface with aplomb.
Skew Wiff finished runner-up in the G2 Eight Carat Classic over 1600 metres on Boxing Day and was freshened after finishing sixth on New Year’s Day in the G2 Royal S.
Today, she jumped well to sit fourth and one off the fence before rider Opie Bosson peeled three wide before the turn and the filly dashed clear to win with authority.
“She didn’t see out the 2000 metres last time. Opie knows her well as she can be tricky in the barrier, but she’s got a lot of ability,” Walker said.
Skew Wiff, who was retained by the farm due to minor X-ray issues as a yearling, is the first foal of the Starcraft mare Starvoia, who was a talented galloper and successful on six occasions including the Listed Mosgiel S.
The Matamata farm purchased her privately in retirement and the granddaughter of the G1 South Australian Oaks winner Dowry has an unraced juvenile colt by Savabeel.
Starvoia produced a filly by Super Seth last season before she was served by Noverre.
