Ocean Park mare scores back-to-back wins

Gallant Ocean Park mare Poser has continued her admirable run of form with a tenacious display to win at Te Rapa on Saturday afternoon.

The Waikato Stud graduate gave weight and a beating to her rivals over 2100 metres when she carried 60.5kg to victory off the back of her Listed success in the Rotorua Cup.

“She had trained on really well and she’s a tough mare,” trainer and owner Kurtis Pertab said.

“She’s not the easiest to ride and Tegan (Newman) gets on really well with her so it never crossed my mind to put an apprentice on.”

The five-year-old settled off the pace before improving to third on the turn and finished relentlessly to claim the thick end of the stake.

Poser, who will run next in the Taumarunui Cup on July 29, has proved an outstanding buy for Pertab with five wins from his Matamata stable.

She was bred and originally raced by Mary Chittick and had her first start for Pertab, who had broken Poser in, before she joined Matamata trainers Graham Richardson and Rogan Norvall and later Andrew Carston.

She failed to race up to expectations and was subsequently offered for sale via the Gavelhouse platform and Pertab purchased her for a meagre $500.

Poser is the first winner for the Pins mare Wannabe, who has most recently produced a pair of Ardrossan fillies and is in foal to Banquo, and she is a half-sister to the winner and G3 Sunline Vase placegetter Gold Spice.

Their dam Zoe Spice was successful on five occasions and is out of a half-sister to the G3 Cuddle S.
winner Rhysess.
