A new-look Poison Chalice produced a dashing performance to successfully resume over 1400
metres at Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

The three-year-old son of Savabeel was making his third appearance for trainer Paul Preusker and first since he was out of the money in the G2 Stutt S. in the spring, after which he was gelded and spelled.

“We’ve waited a long time with him and he’s always showed a lot of ability, but as a bull he was too
intractable,” stable representative Holly McKechnie said.

“It’s nice to get the maiden win out of the way and he should get further in time.”

Bred and sold by Waikato Stud, Poison Chalice began smartly and settled in fifth spot on the fence before rider Declan Bates found himself pocketed until deep into the straight.

“When the gap came he was electric. Most horses would have got beaten with the run he had,” he said.

Poison Chalice was offered by the Matamata farm at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and was knocked down to Ultra Thoroughbred Racing and Kennewell Racing for A$350,000.

A half-brother to multiple winners Pins Prince and Neighbourhood, he is a son of the O’Reilly mare Urban who is a half-sister to the G3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. winner Residential.

Urban has produced three fillies by Savabeel since Poison Chalice and is in foal again to the multiple Champion Sire.
