As Cup Week sets to kick off on Saturday at Riccarton, the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas for three-year-olds is the day’s highlight. It’s timely to reflect on the strength of WS bloodlines and families with five of the last 12 titles claimed by WSNZBreds, winners include:

  • 2021: Noverre (Savabeel x Magic Dancer) (pictured)
  • 2020: Aegon (Sacred Falls x Toss Up)
  • 2018: Madison County (Pins x Red Delicious)
  • 2017: Embellish (Savabeel x Bling)
  • 2012: Sacred Falls (O’Reilly x Iguazu’s Girl), who went on to win two Gr.1 Doncaster Handicaps in Australia.

In the 2024 edition, three-year-old Savaglee (Savabeel x Glee) lines up with two wins at Group 2 level from two previous starts under the guidance of champion trainer Pam Gerard and her Matamata-based team for The Oaks Stud’s Dick Karreman and Rick Williams, who selected the colt from the WS Karaka draft in 2023.
