Ardrossan’s son back to his best

Saltcoats returned to winning ways at Randwick on Saturday afternoon with a stirring second-up performance over 1800 metres.

The Chris Waller-trained son of Waikato Stud resident Ardrossan gave his Benchmark 88 rivals a start and a beating over 1800 metres in the hands of Tommy Berry.

It was a second victory for Saltcoats who had won the Listed Auckland Futurity Stakes as a two-year-old from Samantha Logan’s stable before he was purchased by clients of Waller’s stable with breeder Lib Petagna remaining in the ownership group.

Saltcoats had posted three placings before opening his winning account on Australian soil and the four-year-old produced a gallant performance.

He settled at the tail of the field before picking up ground 600 metres from home and held a sustained finish to earn the thick end of the A$160,000 stake.

His sire Ardrossan will be well represented at the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale with 15 youngsters in the Book 1 session and a further 18 in Book 2.

From small foal crops, Ardrossan is producing big results with winners from all three crops of racing age now and is 15% foals-to-winners.
