Wolfy reacts well to change

Wolfy (NZ) ridden by Ethan Brown wins the VRC Summer Fun Sprint at Flemington Racecourse on January 18, 2025 in Flemington, Australia.

A change of approach by trainer Nicky Ryan with Tivaci’s son Wolfy paid a handsome dividend at Flemington on Saturday afternoon.

The brother of NZB Kiwi contender Sought After reverted to 1200 metres and finished too well for his BenchMark 70 rivals over the straight course in the hands of Ethan Brown.

“Nick opted to freshen him up, drop back in trip and put the blinkers on and it worked very well,” stable representative Damian Kefford said.

“Ethan got him into a nice rhythm and worked into the race at the right time.”

The Waikato Stud-bred and sold four-year-old settled off the early pace before he lengthened stride powerfully to claim the third victory of his career.

Wolfy was purchased by Ryan for A$280,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where he was offered on behalf of the Matamata farm by Sledmere Stud.

His dam Popular is a daughter of Savabeel who was successful twice up to 1400 metres and is out of a sister to the late multiple Group 1 winner and successful sire Sacred Falls.
