Ardrossan’s sons deliver 1-2 punch at Te Rapa
It was all about Ardrossan at Te Rapa in Race 6 with his sons Mo Charaid and Sweetazme going 1-2 in the Ardrossan 1200 over 1200m on Saturday, 23 August.
Mo Charaid returned a first-up winner as a five-year-old, having closed out his four-year-old autumn campaign with a victory before heading to the paddock. Trained by Cambridge horseman Terry Wenn, the gelding was partnered by jockey Matthew Cameron, who had the challenge of barrier 10 over the sprint trip. Jumping cleanly, the pair settled three-wide, three back before unleashing down the straight to score by half a length over the Kenny Rae-trained Sweetazme.
A proud Terry Wenn, who was also the Clerk of the Course at the Waikato Stud Foxbridge Plate Day, led his winner on and said post-race: “We’re very proud. We always thought he was a good horse and he’s starting to prove that now.”
Out of the Ocean Park mare Nicole Maria, Mo Charaid is the only foal of the mare who is owned by Terry Wenn, Mandy Walters and Donald Grayling, and was bred by K Dearden.
From limited opportunities, Ardorssan has sired stakes horses in all three racing crops with winners in NZ, Australia and Hong Kong – he has bigger books of high-quality mares coming through: 80 current two-year-olds and 126 yearlings coming through and will stand this season at $20,000 plus GST (LFG).
Pure Alpha delivers again as Ardrossan continues to rise
Ardrossan gelding Pure Alpha led throughout to win by 1.29 lengths at Eagle Farm for owner Ozzie Kheir, taking his earnings past $300,000. The result caps a stellar run for sire Ardrossan, whose yearlings fetched up to $450,000 this year on strong Hong Kong form.
