Five of last 12 Guineas winners WSNZBred
As Cup Week sets to kick off on Saturday at Riccarton, the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas for three-year-olds is the day’s highlight. It’s timely to reflect on the strength of WS bloodlines and families with five of the last 12 titles claimed by WSNZBreds, winners include:
- 2021: Noverre (Savabeel x Magic Dancer) (pictured)
- 2020: Aegon (Sacred Falls x Toss Up)
- 2018: Madison County (Pins x Red Delicious)
- 2017: Embellish (Savabeel x Bling)
- 2012: Sacred Falls (O’Reilly x Iguazu’s Girl), who went on to win two Gr.1 Doncaster Handicaps in Australia.
In the 2024 edition, three-year-old Savaglee (Savabeel x Glee) lines up with two wins at Group 2 level from two previous starts under the guidance of champion trainer Pam Gerard and her Matamata-based team for The Oaks Stud’s Dick Karreman and Rick Williams, who selected the colt from the WS Karaka draft in 2023.
Mr Bombasa gives Banquo another winner
Three-year-old colt Mr Bombasa provided another winner this season for Banquo, who is having a watershed season with a Group 3 winner and performer also turning heads.

Ardrossan’s son Cannon Hill wins en route to Gr.3 Easter Handicap
WS-bred Cannon Hill (Ardrossan ex Vanilla Essence) won on Saturday, setting himself up for the perfect run toward the Gr.3 Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on 18 April for Tony Pike.
