Jedibeel cuts it fine in Razor Sharp
Gifted five-year-old Jedibeel (ex Starry) has bridged the gap to stakes company in style with a last-gasp victory in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick.
The Waikato Stud-bred and sold son of Savabeel has been a genuine performer throughout his career and added black type with his seventh win from 17 appearances and a record that also features six runner-up finishes.
Trained at Hawkesbury by Brad Widdup, Jedibeel settled in the body of the field and his prospects looked bleak when held up behind traffic in the run home.
A gap presented one off the fence deep into the straight and the five-year-old was through in a flash under the urgings of Tyler Schiller to claim the 1200 metre feature.
“It was a hard watch until the last few strides but full credit to Tyler, he knows him, and it is great to see the horse get rewarded,” Widdup said.
“He has got a great record. I think he is a black-type horse every day of the week and he has proved that today.”
Schiller said Jedibeel was an honest performer who possessed sharp acceleration.
“I was pretty patient and I didn’t want to expose him too early and do anything rash on him.
“He has got a great turn of foot and I thought I put him into a dead-end at one point but I was very grateful I was on a very good horse. He is probably better off ridden like that, but maybe not that close.”
From the family of Waikato Stud’s glamour sprinter I Wish I Win, Jedibeel is a son of the unraced O’Reilly mare Starry, who is the dam of five winners including the Group-performed Starrybeel.
A half-sister to the Listed Widden Stakes winner Delta Girl and from a well-performed family that also features the Gr.1 Livamol Classic winner Savy Yong Blonk.
Jedibeel was originally sold by the Matamata farm at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale for $35,000 and was later purchased by Widdup for A$190,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
He became the fourth stakes winner in seven weeks for Savabeel with Group 1 wins by Atishu (ex Posy) at Flemington on Derby Day, Savaglee (ex Glee) in the Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas and Nereus (ex Eudora) in the Gr.3 Counties Cup at Pukekohe.
Wee Nessy breaks her maiden in style
Savabeel’s three-year-old filly Wee Nessy impressed at Ellerslie, charging home to break her maiden in dominant fashion. The win marked Savabeel’s 1057th individual winner, with his progeny earnings surpassing $208 million as his legacy continues to grow.
