Pedigree Pointers with Gareth Downey – Ocean Park Right On Track

Gareth Downey

Ocean Park has had another nice week, with a new stakes performer and an impressive Metropolitan Sydney winner.

In her 5 start career, Another Dollar has never been out of the money.  On Saturday at Doomben she put in a super effort to add a stakes placing to her 2 win record, when running 2nd in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet.  Her effort was a very impressive and tough effort after being caught wide throughout and then fighting on strongly to finish 2nd to Torvill, who had previously run 2nd in the Gr.1 Surround Stakes.

At Canterbury on Wednesday, Seaway took his record to 3 wins from 6 starts when scoring a very impressive win in the Benchmark 76 event over 1550m.  He was totally dominant in the concluding stages, sprinting clear in the last 200m to win by an impressive 3 length margin.

It is very interesting to compare a stallion of Ocean Park’s profile against Savabeel at the same stage of their careers.  From less runners to date, Ocean Park has left more winners, of more races, and has the same strike rate of black type horses to runners.  We are understandably delighted with the progress being made by Ocean Park’s progeny, and we are very much looking forward to their further development.

From a pedigree perspective, the interesting commonality between the dams of Another Dollar and Seaway is that they both carry Kaoru Star in their pedigrees.  Ocean Park has now had 5 winners from mares carrying Kaoru Star, and they have been winning at a rate of a win for every 5.7 starts.  The horses bred on this pattern to date have included Pretty To Sea (narrowly beaten into 2nd in the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes), Another Dollar (2nd in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet), Seaway (3 wins from 6 starts, with all wins being at Metropolitan level in Sydney), and Ocean Deep (2 wins from 4 starts, including a Metropolitan win in Melbourne).

So, if you have a mare carrying Kaoru Star, make sure you seriously consider Ocean Park as your choice of stallion for her this year.  Some of the sources of Kaoru Star in our part of the world include Captain Piper, Clang, Covetous, Danzero, Dracula, Econsul, Fiesta Star, Full On Aces, Hula Chief, Karioi Star, King’s High, Luskin Star, Marceau, Mighty Avalanche, Old Spice, Pag-Asa, Pins, St Covet, Star Of Luskin, Strategic, Stratum etc
