Wewillrock presses feature race claims

Connections of powerhouse sprinter Wewillrock can look forward to higher honours with increased confidence following the five-year-old’s runaway victory at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The son of El Roca is now a $5 equal favourite for next month’s G2 Foxbridge Plate and has come in to $18 for the G1 Tarzino Trophy on his home track at Hastings in September.

“We would love the opportunity to get him over 1400 metres as the tracks firm up so there are races for him at the spring carnival,” said Leah Zydenbos, who trains the five-year-old with Guy Lowry.

Wewillrock broke well to make the running at Te Rapa and he held a strong gallop in the run home to waltz in by three lengths.

“Wow, that was a good win, he was just cruising all the way and it was a really good ride,” Zydenbos said.

Wewillrock was partnered by emerging apprentice Triston Moodley and they had the 1200 metre open handicap in the bag a long way from home.

“I couldn’t hear any other horses in the straight, he just me along easily,” he said.

“He’s got plenty of gears, he’s a very good horse.”

Wewillrock is raced by Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick with good friends, the Hawke’s Bay-based brothers Mark and Paul Apatu, and was purchased out of Westbury Stud’s draft at Karaka in 2020 by Lowry for $35,000.

He is a son of the Strategic mare Princess Michella who is a daughter of the multiple stakes-winning mare Wazawatsyn.
