Winning Wednesday for Sav

It was a wonderful winning Wednesday for Waikato Stud’s ten-time NZ Champion Sire Savabeel, who recorded three winners across both sides of the Tasman, with two victories at Matamata and another at Randwick-Kensington in Sydney.

Leading the charge was the Waikato Stud-bred Honour Roll (Savabeel ex Honor), who produced an eye-catching performance on debut for Te Akau Racing. Having just his second race-day start, the two-year-old son of Savabeel stretched clear to score by an impressive 3.7 lengths.

Post-race, co-trainer Mark Walker said: “It was really good to see him win the way he did today. I actually recommended the mare (Honor) to Mark Chittick after I trained her in Singapore. She won over 1000 metres and had a lot of speed. He was a good value purchase and it looks like he could be a stakes-quality horse with a good future.”

Honour Roll was purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $190,000 from Waikato Stud’s draft at the NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. His dam, Honor, has since produced a weanling colt by Ardrossan.

Soon after, and donning the Te Aukau colours was the four-year-old mare Luvabeel, who broke her maiden at her ninth start.

Luvabeel’s win puts Savabeel $45,000 in progeny earnings short of claiming his 11th NZ Champion Sire title.
