Strong start to Sale for WS

Lot 239 Savabeel x Smart Thinking

Waikato Stud’s first three offerings on the opening of the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale were the subjects of widespread interest with each changing hands for A$200,000 or more.

First into the ring was an Ocean Park colt, Lot 10, with trainer Bjorn Baker and bloodstock agent Jim Clarke having the final say on the handsome bay, who was offered on behalf of the Matamata nursery by Ryan Arnel’s Stonehouse Thoroughbreds.

The colt is out of the High Chaparral mare Kazemi, who was successful on three occasions up to 2440 metres.

She is a half-sister to the Group 1 Makfi S. winner I Do, dam of the multiple Sydney winner Kiss The Bride, and to the Listed Queensland Cup winner Iggi Pop.

Under the second dam Freequent, who triumphed in the Group 3 New Zealand St Leger, is the Group 1 Queensland Derby winner Court Ruler and Justaskme, successful in an edition of the Group 2 Tauranga S. and the Listed Opunake Cup.

Lot 80 was the farm’s daughter of champion sire Savabeel and the O’Reilly mare Mary Quant, who won five races from 1200 to 2000 metres, and the filly was snapped up by leading trainer Ciaron Maher.

The dam is a sister to stakes winner Wolfwhistle, blood sister to the dual Group 1 winner Tiptronic and a three-quarter sister to the Group 1 WATC Derby winner Guyno.

Mary Quant is a daughter of Waikato Stud’s two-time Group 1 winner Legs with the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud S. winner Sixty Seconds adding further to a rich and deep pedigree.

Lot 239 was the farm’s top lot of the day, a son of Savabeel out of the O’Reilly mare Smart Thinking selling for A$260,000 to John Foote Bloodstock.

He is the second foal from a winning dam, who comes from a well-performed family that includes Group 2 Avondale Guineas winner Surely Sacred and Group 1 Queensland Oaks winner Provocative.

The Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale continues until Tuesday 1st March 2022.
