Ellis secures top Savabeel filly

Lot 560 - Savabeel x Style By Design (filly)

Te Akau supremo David Ellis has enjoyed a long and successful association with the progeny of Savabeel and it was no surprise that he signed for Waikato Stud’s headline act at Karaka this afternoon.

Lot 560 was the farm’s top offering on Day 3 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale when she was secured for $350,000.

The good-looking daughter of the champion stallion is out of the Iffraaj mare Style By Design who was successful as a two-year-old and placed at Listed level in the Ryder Stakes and O’Leary’s Fillies’ Stakes.

The second dam is the dual stakes winner Chaparella, whose daughter Riva Capri also claimed an edition of the O’Leary’s Stakes.

“She’s a very tidily put together filly, totally correct, plenty of quality, rich colour, and just a really nice package,” Ellis said.

His greatest Savabeel success story to be purchased out of Waikato Stud’s draft at Karaka is the multiple Group 1 winner and current New Zealand Horse of the Year Probabeel.

Meanwhile, a son of the great stallion will be heading to Victoria after Lot 565 was knocked down for $230,000 to online bidder and Group 1-winning trainer Robert Hickmott.

He boasts an impressive pedigree page with the colt’s dam a half-sister to the three-time Group 1 winner Efficient and three-quarter sister to the G2 Dato Tan Chin Nam S. winner Guillotine.

The G1 Herbie Dyke S. winner On The Rocks, who has also twice been successful at Group 2 level, is also on the page.

Tivaci also enjoyed an outstanding sale and Lot 546 was a hot ticket item before she was sold to Kevin Walls for $350,000.

Walls spent 23 years at Trelawney Stud before a stint in Victoria and returned home to establish
KPW Bloodstock.

“Our horses stay in New Zealand to get broken in and will then probably go over to Australia in November or December,” he said.

The filly is a half-sister to the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. winner Tabata and their winning dam Splitsecond is a black type-placed daughter of Pins.

The pedigree page also features the former champion three-year-old Sixty Seconds, who won the G1 Arrowfield Stud S. and her sister Spottswoode claimed an edition of the G3 Manawatu Classic.

Another smart daughter of Tivaci, Lot 463, was snapped up by astute judge Paul Moroney who went to $140,000 with his final bid.

The youngster is out of the unraced Fast ‘N’ Famous mare Rehab who is a half-sister to farm graduate and G1 Queensland Derby winner Brambles whose brother Lincoln Blue won an edition of the G3 Wellington S.
