Savabeel’s son on target again
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Savvy Sovereign produced a tenacious effort over 1200 metres at Warrnambool on Monday afternoon to further his record.
The Waikato Stud graduate was into stride quickly to sit in fourth spot before challenging 400 metres from home and stuck grimly to his guns under topweight of 61.5kg for a neck victory.
“It’s great to get these opportunities and he travelled well and it was a really tough effort,” successful rider Mitchell Aitken said.
The four-year-old son of Savabeel has now won on four occasions and posted a further nine placings from his 18 appearances.
“The team is going well and Mitchell gave him every chance. The horse looked terrific in the yard and he’s got a big stride on him,” stable representative Dean Larrson said.
Savvy Sovereign was a $150,000 Karaka purchase and is out of the winning O’Reilly mare Tiara, who is a granddaughter of the G1 Auckland Cup winner Royal Tiara.
Tiara produced a filly last season by Tivaci before a return visit to the Group 1-winning son of High Chaparral.
