Super debut winner for Seth

Super Seth has wasted no time opening his stallion account with his son Poetic Champion spreadeagling his rivals at the first time of asking at Hawera on Saturday afternoon.

The Waikato Stud resident was a high-class performer during his racing days across the Tasman where he won on five occasions and emphasised his class when he claimed the G1 Caulfield Guineas.

By Dundeel, he has now made a cracking start to the second stage of his career with the Tony Pike-trained Poetic Champion scoring untouched by a widening 6.3 lengths in the hands of Craig Grylls.

“He jumped well to sit outside the leader and I gave him a bit of a squeeze and he absolutely took off, he’s a really nice horse,” Grylls said.

Poetic Champion is raced by breeder GSA Bloodstock, who will be counting their blessings after he failed to meet his $80,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale where he was offered by Haunui Farm.

The chestnut is now guaranteed a start in the Karaka Million after banking the thick end of the $20,000 stake at Hawera.

“We know where we’re going so we can just sit on him now,” stable representative Mark Hills said.

“He’s a real beauty and he knew what he was here for. He showed a turn of foot in his trial and his jump-out win was good, he’s an exciting horse.”

Poetic Champion, who was Super Seth’s fourth representative, boasts an impressive pedigree and his dam Regally Blonde is a half-sister by Royal Academy to the Australian and European Group 1 winner and successful sire Starspangledbanner.

Another half-sister in Gold Chant was a black-type performer and is the dam of the G1 Thousand Guineas winner Amicus.
