Super Seth strikes twice at Caulfield
Saturday at Caulfield saw the sire on fire, Super Seth, notch up a double on the nine-race card.
First off the mark was the impeccably bred three-year-old filly Madiyya, who recorded her first metropolitan win with a dominant performance in the Assured Insurance Brokers Handicap (1400m).
Prepared by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes, the daughter of Super Seth is bred and raced by Trelawney Stud. Madiyya is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner and sire Grunt (O’Reilly), and Group Two winner Zayydani (Savabeel).
“It was a terrific ride by Luke (Currie),” said co-trainer Will Hayes. “It was a bit sticky early – he tried to hold a spot, and it didn’t quite work out. But he made a great decision to slot into the three-wide line with cover.”
“She’s still very green and raw with plenty of upside. She didn’t handle the bend too well but once she balanced up, she was too strong. We’re thrilled to get the win for Trelawney.”
A trip to Queensland could now be on the cards, with the Gr.3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm a possible target later this month.
Meanwhile, another Super Seth in Rogan (ex Tiara), trained by Cliff Brown, also looks Queensland-bound after his win on Saturday 3 May. He’s aiming for the Gr.1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on 31 May. Rogan is a half-brother to Von Hauke (ex Tiara) by Savabeel.
To cap off the day, Mary Eliza (ex Bonneval), trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, added a second win to her resume with a strong metropolitan performance over 1600m in Race 6.
Bred and raced by Garry Chittick of Waikato Stud, Mary Eliza is the third foal from the outstanding mare Bonneval, a superstar on the track winning seven of her 14 starts including the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks, Gr.1 Australian Oaks and Gr.1 Underwood Stakes. She was crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.
Bonneval has a rising two-year-old colt by Noverre, named Jean Georges who was withdrawn from NZB Karaka and Inglis Easter and retained to race, she has a weanling filly by Super Seth and is in foal to him.
With three Group 1 winners across two countries already under his belt, Super Seth is fast building an elite reputation – 2025 applications to the exciting young sire are by application only and close at 5pm (NZT) on Wednesday, 4 June – click here to apply.
