Super win as La Dorada adds Gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes
In a dazzling win reminiscent of her 2025 Karaka Millions 2YO triumph three weeks ago, Waikato Stud-bred filly La Dorada (Super Seth x Gold Fever) secured a new Group victory for her sire while adding a third win from four starts to her growing black-type record.
Jumping smartly from barrier six in the seven-horse field over 1200m, jockey Michael McNab guided La Dorada to the rail within the first 100 metres, where she settled comfortably. Waiting patiently until the 200-metre mark, McNab urged her forward and despite a strong challenge from To Cap It All, La Dorada surged home to score by half a length.
Sporting the Te Akau Racing colours, La Dorada was bred and sold by Waikato Stud and purchased at Karaka last year for $190,000 by David Ellis CNZM.
She now joins Sethito (Super Seth x Suavito) as a potential contender for Ellerslie’s 8 March meeting. While Sethito lines up in the NZB Kiwi for Waikato Thoroughbred Racing’s slot, La Dorada will target the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes.
Out of the Savabeel mare Gold Fever, winner of the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and placed in the Gr.1 Diamond Stakes, La Dorada hails from a strong family. Her half-sister, Gold Rocks, also claimed the Breeders’ Stakes.
With two crops of racing age, Super Seth has Group winners across both of his crops, including Linebacker, Sethito and now La Dorada.
He currently ranks ninth on the Australian Second Season Sires’ Premiership with A$1,402,135 in earnings and leads the NZ Second Season Sires’ Premiership as the only sire of his cohort to surpass the NZ$1 million mark with five months of the season remaining.
The Corner with Garry Chittick
I keep on proposing my retirement from the burden of a weekly Corner. I make the excuse it is hard to be credible, hard to let the two of you know about anything in our sport that hasn’t been covered before.
